The Danish Girl

Jsem si jistá, že nikomu neunikla žhavá novinka v kinech zvaná The Danish Girl. Asi také není divu, že mě film zaujal nejprve kvůli názvu. Nejenom, že se jedná o dánský příběh založený na pravdě, ale město, kde žiju, v něm hraje podstatně velkou roli.

I'm sure that the new movie The Danish Girl didn't come unnoticed to anyone. It's also no surprise to say that the first thing that got my attention for this movie was the title. Not even is it a Danish story based on truth but the city I live in now plays a big role in it.

Role Vejle/The Role of Vejle

Děj filmu pojednává o prvním muži, který podstoupil operaci změny pohlavních orgánů (vůbec mě nepřekvapuje, že to byl Dán). A právě tento muž se narodil a žil ve Vejle. Film jsem bohužel ještě neviděla, ale evidentně se zde Vejle mnohokrát zmiňuje. Ale vyvedu Vás z omylu, ve Vejle se nic nenatáčelo, pouze v Kodani (grr, zase si vše nechali pro sebe). Ale kdo ví, třeba to přesto zvýší Vejle popularitu mezi turisty. Osobně si myslím, že by bylo skvělé udělat nějakou exhibici nebo označit dům, kde byl Einar Wegener narozen. Třeba někdy v budoucnu.

The movie describes a story of a man who became recipient of sexual reassignment surgery. And right this man was born and lived in Vejle. Vejle is mentioned many times, the movie is not shot there though. It was the city of Copenhagen that was the centre of the film staff. But who knows there might still be an increasement in the number of tourist wondering what the city where Einar lived looks like. I personally think it would be great to run an exhibition or mark the house, where Einar was born. We'll see in the future...

Příběh Lili Elbe/The Story of Lili Elbe

Přestože jsem film ještě neviděla (ale už fakt musím!), tak jsem četla spoustu zajímavých článků porovnávajících film se skutečností atd. Možná, že někdo z Vás se na film ani neplánuje podívat, tak tu shrnu v bodech to, co mě zaujalo nejvíce.

I haven't seen the whole movie yet but I already read a few interesting articles comparing the movie with the actual true story. The movie basically does not depart from the reality at all, still I decided to point out a few facts that really gained my interest.

1) Einar Wegener se narodil roku 1882 a ve 48 letech zemřel jako Lili Elbe následkem četných operací v Drážďanech.

Einar Wegener was born in 1882 and died in the age of 48 as Lili Elbe as a consequence of the multiple genitalia operations.

2) To, že je Einar "žena uvězněná v mužském těle" si poprvé uvědomil ve 26 letech, kdy zaskočil za rodinnou přítelkyni a slavnou herečku Annu Larrsen jako modelka. Pro jeho překvapení se v převleku za ženu cítil až nezvykle dobře a přirozeně.

The fact that Einar is a "woman trapped in a man's body" first crossed his mind in the age of 26 when he substituted as a model for a family friend and famous actress Anna Larrsen. For his own surprise, he felt more than comfortable and very natural in a woman's dress.

3) Anna Larrsen byla taktéž, kdo vymyslel pro Einara přezdívku Lili.

Anna Larrsen was also the own who came up with the name Lili.

4) Poté, co se Einar svěřil lékařům, diagnostikovali ho schizofrenií a nařídili léčbu.

After Einar confided to the doctors, they diagnosed him with schisofrenia.

5) V Paříži, kam se později přestěhovali a kde jeho tajemství nebylo známo, ho představovala jeho žena Gerda jako svojí švagrovou.

In Paris, where he and his wife Gerda later moved and where his secret was unknown, his wife introduced him as his sister-in-law.

6) Není stoprocentně jisté, zda Lili Elbe byla první, kdo postoupil změnu pohlaví. Sice neexistují záznamy o nikom jiném, ale předmět je stále debatou. Mimo to, přestože Lili byly implikovány vaječníky, ne vždy je její změna pohlaví považována za úplnou.

It is not 100% sure that Lili Elbe was the first one to go through the genitalia change surgery. There are no record of anyone else having the surgery before him but debates still take place. 

7) Einar podstoupil 4 až 5 operací. První v Berlíně, ostatní v Drážďanech. Poslední operace, která obsahovala vložení dělohy, se pro Lili prokázala smrtelnou.

Einar went through 4 or 5 surgeries. The first one was done in Berlin, the rest in Dresden. The last surgery that included inserting a uterus, proved to fatal to Lili.

8) Einar i Gerda byli oba velmi úspěšnými výtvarníky. Oba získali několik cen a jejich díla byla vystavena po celém Dánsku, včetně Vejle (tam bych se měla jít kouknout!).

Both Einar and Gerda were very succesful artists. They both won several awards and their pieces were exhibited all over Denmark, including Vejle! (now I have to go there)

9) Manželé Wegenerovi se přestěhovali do Paříže z důvodu nepřátelské atmosféry, která nastala, poté co se provalilo Einarovo tajemství. V té době byla Paříž přijatelnější (i když myslím, že dnes by tomu tak nebylo).

The Wegeners moved to Paris because of the hostile environment that set in after Einar's secret was discovered by the public. In that time Paris offered a better welcoming.

10) Lili Elbe stihla sepsat svojí autobiografii zvaná Man into Woman: The First Sex Change.

Lili Elbe managed to write her autobiography before her death called: Man into Women: The First Sex Change.

11) Alicia Vikander, která sehrála roli Einarovy ženy, získala Oscara za herečku ve vedlejší roli. Eddie Redmayne, který ztvárnil roli Lili, svoji nominaci neproměnil. (Upřímně, díky bohu za Eddieho! Věřím, že lepšího herce by k roli sehnat nemohli. Nejen, že je opravdu skvělý herec, ale sám je ve skutečnosti velmi ženský, takže mu role vyloženě padla. Myslím však, že si díky této roli nic neuvědomil, hehe).

Alicia Vikander, who played the role of Einar's wife, won an Oscar for best actress in supporting role. Eddie Redmayne, who played Lili, didn't turn his nomination. Despite that, I don't think there is an actor more suited for this role. Not only is he an amazing actor but also has himself some feminine features which made the role easier for him. (Let's hope it didn't give him any agenda)
